Foss Islands Way
The old Derwent Light Railway from Wigginton Road to Metcalfe Lane in Osbaldwick
Our efforts here a currently overshadowed by the withdrawal of funding for the daily litter and glass clearance. The state of the path has deteriorated markedly and we are lobbying for a re-instatement of the funding. Meetings have taken place with Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust, York City Council and Sustrans to try and agree (and find funding for) a long term solution. Please contact your local councillor to add your voice.
As an interim measure we are organising - with Sustrans Volunteer Rangers and Derwethorpe Residents - a 'Big Tidy' on March 9th - meet at Morrisons at 10am with gardening gloves.
Sustrans have submitted a major proposal for improvements to the route (
too large for the website but available on request
) that look likely to receive approval from Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust and the Council. We like the proposal but are worried that there is no realistic sustainable management plan and that any improvements will be jeopardised by the lack of day-to-day management. We also asked Sustrans to liaise with our partners at Yorkshire Wildlife Trust to strengthen
the
biodiversity aspects of the proposals. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to get this right and we would hate to see it wasted.
We submitted our own proposal regarding long-term management and you can read this at the following link
