Brunswick Organic Nursery

This south-bound section Route 65 of the National Cycle Network includes the celebrated 'Solar System' scale model of the Universe. It also form part of the new Route 66 to Leeds via Tadcaster At Bishopthorpe it passes alongside the Brunswick Organic Nursery (BON). The nursery is run in part by local people with learning difficulties and York Greenway Champions work with them to enhance the biodiversity of this section. We also work closely with the Naburn Station Cafe.

Our efforts to limit the spread of invasive non-native plants (Himalayan Balsam) that threaten to crowd out native species have continued this year. This section is a SINC (Site of Interest for Nature Conservation) recognised as a green corridor for migrating species, all of which need the diversity of cover and feeding that Himalayan Balsam destroys. HB will not be eliminated but our objective is to control it enough to keep the green corridor open for other species. Progress has been made but its a 3-year project and seeds have started to pop so that's it for this year.

This has take up a lot of our time but we have also plug-planted wildflowers in key locations and set up a bench near the wetland area (home of bee orchids)

BON helped us with selective planting of native wildflowers so look out for the wildflower meadow next spring! An Interpretation Board has been set up explaining what we are trying to achieve.

We were pleased to receive a grant of £500 to support this work from the Trafford Centre and a Pedalling Picnic for BON workers and children from Bishopthorpe School was organised in October to celebrate what we have achieved. It was a great success with 8 year 5s from the school Bike-it project and 20 from BON, on special bikes from Get Cycling. The latter was funded by local charities with enough for us to organise a follow up event in 2013.

York Greenway Champions and the Brunswick Centre are also cooperating on the Balloon Tree Copse (see 'Current Projects')
