Balloon Tree Wood *

On 21st and 28th January 2013 a team from Brunswick Organic Nursery thinned some trees and removing the timber harvested for sale at their shop in Bishopthorpe. Clearings were created and light let in by 'crown lifting' and the team came back on 18th February to plant native species shrubs to widen he biodiversity of the wood. The path we made last year is clearly well used.

This small copse lies alongside the A166 just before Stamford Bridge. It was bought by Sustrans to provide an off-road link on Route 66 to avoid crossing the busy main road.

We think the copse could be improved by -
 - selective thinning of conifers to give breathing space to deciduous native species of trees
  - planting wildflowers
  - creating a circular path for walkers
   - creating a sunny picnic spot on the south side

We are implementing
this in conjunction with a team from Brunswick Nurseries. We have cleared a path for walkers through the trees and will be selling the timber as logs at the Nursery this winter. We have asked the Forestry Commission for a small grant to enable us to get a proper Managment Plan devised.

We had a meeting  with local councillors who are keen to support the project. Open this link for details of the proposal project proposal.docx.

*  the balloon tree was a beautifully shaped tree, a landmark at the turning for Buttercrambe. Now sadly gone but immortalised in the name of the farm shop just up the road.
